The most important thing teachers can encourage in young people is to develop ‘inquiring minds’ - to ensure that they know how to gather information, that they check that information and take it from a multiplicity of sources.

MindRising 2016

MindRising 2016 is a competition celebrating 200 years of the island of  Ireland. MindRising champions the use of digital technology in schools & groups. MindRising is about telling stories about our past and our future. Teams will work on their digital storytelling skills across a range of media which includes building elements of their projects in Minecraft. They are encouraged to remember the past 100 years and imagine what the next 100 years could bring.

But first watch this

Watch this video  to get a flavour of what's in-store

MindRising is open to

MindRising Divisions

MindRising has 2 divisions

Junior maps to

  • Primary school 1st-4th class

Senior broadly maps to

  • Primary 5th-6th class
  • Lower-post-primary 1st-2nd year.

See eligibility criteria for details.

Why would we enter?

As an educator, I value the opportunities presented by MindRising 2016 for children and young people to mark the 1916 centenary in ways that promote their historical understanding, help them to connect the past and the present and support them in imagining the future. Whether they are drawing on the evidence to reconstruct past events and localities, investigating change over time or building on the present to imagine possible futures, MindRising offers rich opportunities for child-led and enquiry-based learning and, most importantly, gives voice to that learning though digital storytelling.
— Professor Fionnuala Waldron Cregan Professor of Education, DCU Institute of Education,

MindRising & Minecraft

What about MineCraft?

MindRising is an exciting learning opportunity enabling students to draw on a wide range of curriculum in an interdisciplinary way while also developing the key skills our young people need to live and learn in the complex connected global society we live in.
— Dr. Deirdre Butler St.Patrick's College DCU Institute of Education

What is Minecraft?

Minecraft is an open world computer game that has no specific goals for the player to accomplish, allowing players a large amount of freedom in choosing how to play the game. You can think about this as a digital building blocks, an open free format construction based game. The creative and building aspects of Minecraft enable players to build constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D world. The worlds can be shared with others and allow collaborative building and play.

What has Minecraft to do with education?

Educators around the world are discovering that Minecraft provides infinite possibilities across curricular areas from mathematics to storytelling. Minecraft adds a valuable tool to a teacher's toolbox.

I love the thinking behind MindRising 2016 - using the centenary of the Rising as a hinge moment of history from which the students of today’s Ireland, who will be the leaders of its tomorrow, can range back and forth between past and future, drawing inspiration from what has gone before to imagine and dream what comes next. The essence of the Rising was a group of people stepping forward into leadership and shaping the future for the generations that followed. That is our opportunity now also as a country in 2016 and our young people are a key dimension of that; MindRising 2016 provides a great platform on which to let the dreaming commence!

I love the idea of hacking the education sector. It is inconceivable to me that learning can happen without the deep integration of technology. Education now needs to be co-produced by both pupil and teacher. I believe that bringing the world of Mindcraft into the classroom will bring opportunities to both and what better way to start by envisioning both the past and the future in this year of commemoration. I look forward to seeing the amazing results.
